July 2021All of the Good News Garden plants have found new homes. We had planned on putting some pepper and tomato plants in the planters at church, but I am concerned they would not get watered often enough. I think we will continue with flowers in these planters. Charlie and I are nurturing several of the GNG plants in our yard and we plan to share the produce later in the summer.
The weekly Good News Gardens webinar series "Growing Faith: Exploring the Interconnections of Food, Justice and the Sacred" is continuing on Tuesdays for a total of ten weeks. There will be a "Good News Gardens MA Story Sharing Evening" on Wednesday, July 14th. People are invited to join us on line from 7:00-8:15 p.m. This will be a time of sharing stories, ideas and connections that have happened in our Good News Gardens MA communities. We would love to hear from you: nothing is too small to be good news. How are your plants doing? I would love to travel about Trinity's gardens and take some photos to share with the GNG MA team that evening. Let me know if I can take a picture or two of some of your GNG plants. June 2021Good News Gardens has had a little bit of bad news and lots of good news. The bad news is that in an effort to give away plants on Earth Day, many little plants were shocked by the frigid weather that we had on Earth Day. Some never did recover. We lost several of our little friends. I am wondering how many of the plants people took home on Earth Day were also affected? If your little plants did not survive, we have more to give away.
Now, for the good news, Dave and Lucille C. shared a photo of one of their newly adopted tomato plants. One is on their deck and the other has been planted in a raised garden, both seem to be thriving! Cathy P. reported that her dwarf sunflowers have buds on them and one of the men who comes to the community dinners invited Charlie J. over to his garden at the home across the street for the church so he could show how his container garden is thriving. Many of the residents at that house combined their plants to make a small garden. The Good News Gardens have spread as far North as Danvers. A friend of mine from work asked to be part of our garden. And as far west as Charlton as Mother Judith brought Peggy B a pot of zinnias. The zinnias don't look all that healthy, they were also shocked by the cold on Earth Day. However, Peggy told me she has accepted the challenge to nurse them back to health. I volunteered at the Garden of Hope off of the bike trail in Milford on 6/5. We planted a 20 foot by 20 foot garden all with donated plants from several area businesses. This is a communal garden and all are invited to weed and water as well as to share in the harvest. Most of the produce will go to the community food bank. There were so many plants that the folks at Garden of Hope donated some of them for us to use in our Good News Gardens. We are all growing together. We will give away more plants on Sunday, June 13th and on Thursday, June 17th. All of the plants are safe to stay outside 24/7 now. Remember, on hot days they are really thirsty, please give them water often. I look forward to sharing our harvest with friends, family and neighbors. May 2021These smaller plants stayed here at the nursery. They will be given away when they get a little bigger. The youth group collected pails for Good News Gardens then Jon & Charlie turned them into self watering containers. We will transplant the plants when they get bigger and we will help them find new homes and a new gardeners, new people to enjoy and share the harvest. We have about 100 plants here at the nursery.
We already found new homes for about 120 plants. Gardening advice is available if anyone has questions about caring for their new plants. The National Good News Gardens has created a curriculum for a ten session course that combines topics of food and faith. We have no solid plans for leading this group at Trinity, Milford, but I am wondering if anyone has questions about it? I am happy to teach if people are interested in the course.
